Spring Means Gardening in Chattanooga

Spring seems to have finally sprung in Chattanooga. The early trees are blooming, daffodils are showing their smiling heads and I for one have the itch to get out and work in my yard now that we have had a few days of sunshine. Spring means gardening and in Chattanooga, we take that very seriously. Thanks to a great climate and usually and early spring, you can start gardening and landscaping in early April. Chattanooga has many go to sources for the home gardener. Whether you are a minimalist, vegetable raiser or a hardcore dirty girl, you can find the right materials and plenty of advice.

The Barn Nursery

This is my go to place for gardening when #1 I want to get ideas and #2 when I have questions. Have a plant that is not thriving? Need to keep your soil from blowing away? Tomatoes getting eaten by critters? The folks at “The Barn” know their stuff. Plus they have the most beautiful plants in town and just about every kind you could think of or want to plant. Flowers to trees, they have them all and about a million pots to choose from to plant them in. Little red wagons are available to transport your finds. They also have one of the best home decor shops in town. Visible from I-24, The Barn Nursery is open 7 days a week and is located at 1801 E. 24th Street Place.

Crabtree Farms

Located in the heart of Rossville, this urban farm is something to see. Twice a year they have a huge plant sale. This spring's plant sale is April 15th. If you miss that, their farm stand is open spring through fall, offers a recorded daily post of what is available and offers plants through most of the spring. The farmers at Crabtree are super friendly and will not only answer your questions, but will take the time to explain why! They also offer classes including preservation and kids classes. Located at 1000 East 30th Street, Chattanooga, TN 37409.

Holcomb Garden Center

Started in 1967, Holcomb Garden Center is still family owned. You will find friendly and knowledgeable staff at either of their two locations. Everything you could need from trowels to petunias can be found. The main reason I go to Holcomb is they know lawns. Whether you are a black thumb just hanging on trying to grow grass or have a yard that rivals the Master’s course, your questions will be answered. 5513 Hwy 153 Hixson, TN 37343

Whatever you like to do outside, Chattanooga has a great climate to grow just about anything. Go grow something and send us pictures!
