Chinese New Year
Did you know Chattanooga has a sister city in China? We do! Wuxi, is an old city in the Jiangsu province and is located on teh Yangtze River. Just like us, it is one of the hubs of China's modern industry. To celebrate our sister city and the Chinese New Year (year of the monkey), the US-China People's Friendship Association - Chattanooga Chapter is hosting the "China-Nooga New Year Lion Dance Celebration" at the Chattanooga Zoo. In traditional Chinese culture, lions were mythical creatures and the dance is performed to pray for luck. Beginning after 4 pm, the Chien Hong Kongfu Academy of Atlanta will perform the Lion Dance. Additional performances of traditional Chinese songs and dance will continue until after 5 pm. Attendees will have access to the zoo exhibits until 6 pm, which include red pandas, snow leopards and their Himalayan Passage. A traditional Chinese New Year dinner will also be served. Call to reserve your space for this free event: Bob Edwards, 423-260-1402. Tickets to the zoo must be purchased for admission, but there is not additional fee for this fun event. Saturday, 4pm 301 North Holtzclaw Ave.
If you don't get tickets to the China-Nooga event... fear not! You can take your little ones to the Creative Discovery Museum from 12-4pm for their Chinese New Year event. Featuring crafts, cooking lessons, dance, martial arts and sword displays and of course, the lion dance, there is plenty to immerse your children in this wonderful culture. Tickets to the Chattanooga Creative Discover Museum can be purchased online or at the museum. 321 Chestnut St.
